ENGINEERING NETWORKIESS provides a great avenue to not only form good friendships but also to build your professional and career contacts. You will find that the network of like-minded engineers you have built throughout your university life particularly useful when you step into the workforce. Career-minded members will appreciate the close relationship IESS has with the Engineering faculty as well as with Engineers Australia, the peak engineering body. IESS members will have the opportunity to network and gain industry exposure.
TRIPS, TOURS & FREE LUNCH!
IESS includes day/overnight tours as part of its yearly planned activities. To date we have made trips to some of Victoria's most prominent tourist spots such as Philip Island, Mornington Peninsular, and Great Ocean Road, and most recently Mount Hotham. These trips are organized in hope of fostering closer ties and building stronger friendship between IESS members as well as to provide a chance for international students to explore greater Victoria. Other social events we have had in the past include beach excursion, paintball, and poker night. Our famous IESS free lunch held at the start of every semester aims to bring together members of different nationalities. Attendance is always impressive, thanks to the different mouth-watering delicacies.
INDUSTRIAL & EDUCATIONAL VISITS
Engineering is a very diverse industry with many streams such as civil, chemical, electrical, mechanical, software, etc. The aim of our industrial visits is to expose students to the real world of engineering. Through these visits, students are able to observe the work culture and appreciate the different aspects of engineering by applying the what they have learnt. Among the visits IESS has made are to the A.W. Bell Factory in Dandenong and the Toyota Plant in Altona.
ANNUAL SPORTS & CULTURAL EVENTS
IESS also holds joint events with other societies - most commonly with the I-Group which consists of International Commerce, Law, and Medical Students Society. The Annual ball, which features an exciting theme every year, is held to commemorate the end of a term and is usually the most anticipated event of the year. International Games (I-Games) is another event to look forward to; bringing competitors from the different I-Group societies in the spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie. Entry is free and participants compete in various games including soccer, basketball, and badminton. Melbourne University Overseas Student Services (MUOSS) organizes cultural events every semester such as Night Market and Festival of Nations. IESS is proudly affiliated to MUOSS, regularly participating in the aforementioned events as part of our effort to foster intercultural ties.
